Frequently Asked Questions

The limitations of Gresham have become increasingly apparent over the past decade. From the technology capabilities to the physical safety and space of the building, it has become clear that we have outgrown what a building of its age can provide. To renovate the building to bring it both up to code and up to the standards necessary to provide a 21st century education would be incredibly costly in terms of space and financial resources. We exhausted all options to save Gresham; however, it ultimately was decided the safest and most beneficial solution to our community is to remove and reimagine the building.  

Yes. The Galloway family was consulted before the final decision and understood what must be done to preserve Galloway for future generations to come. 

The Gresham Building is currently safe to house students; however, we know that the longevity of the building is limited.

We have been working closely with the Atlanta Historical Society to ensure the history of Gresham is honored and preserved throughout construction. Cooper Carry will be incorporating beloved elements of Gresham, such as the transom windows and the fireplaces, into the new Upper Learning building.

While we are unable to keep the century-old, plaster columns of the building, the new Upper Learning building will honor our facade with columns of its own.

We are working with Cooper Carry to potentially use the salvageable bricks as pavers in the expanded courtyard.

Yes. We will have several new outdoor spaces, including outdoor terraces, in the new building.

Due to the construction of the new building, Gresham will be removed from the historic register. 

The communal feel of Galloway will remain regardless of building renovations. We are designing a building to fit Galloway, rather than fitting Galloway in a building. 

We will welcome members of the community past and present back to campus for a final walk through of Gresham for the community in the summer of 2024. More information will be communicated in the coming months. 

We will be creating a space in the courtyard of the new building to recognize and honor those individuals who currently have remembrances in the garden.

No. Galloway will maintain its current enrollment and does not plan to grow.

No. We strive to maintain our 8:1 student-teacher ratio and that will not change.

We will have at least two resource officers on campus available to transport students with mobility needs via golf carts. 

No. Our arts and athletics programming will continue as usual.

Yes, the world languages teachers will stay in the Stone House.  

The interior of Sims will not be affected. The playground will be under construction, but several of our  existing facilities (Chaddick, The Gym, The Green) will be available for play.

In the summer of 2024, the  existing EL playground will be demolished and a new playground will be installed at the rear of campus, providing greater security for our youngest learners.

Middle Learning will benefit from multiple elements of the project: an upgraded playspace on the Green, a larger dining footprint, and reclaimed classroom space, since the space that currently serves as Flik Dining will be given back to Middle Learning. Plans are still underway for how this space will be used. 

Traditions are a crucial part of the Galloway experience, and we have a team currently evaluating the ways in which we can reimagine as many traditions as possible. 

Yes, we will be arranging for the Class of 2025 to take their photo on the steps of Gresham prior to the end of the 2023-24 school year. 

Students will be encouraged to use the entirety of campus, including the front lawn, areas of Chaddick, and the Chastain Park picnic pavilion next to the Upper Fields during their free periods.

No. Our entire community will continue to learn together.

No. Students will still be able to interact with the community through their classes in Chaddick, the Stone House, and the Gym, as well as through arts and athletics programming.

Planning for securing the campus is already underway with Winter Johnson, a firm that has extensive experience with construction sites like ours. The entire footprint of the construction site will be fenced while construction is ongoing. We will have at least two resource officers on campus throughout construction. 

No, construction workers will have a separate entrance and exit that will not require them to interact with our students in any capacity. 

As part of this campus reimagining, we will be installing new fencing surrounding the perimeter of campus.

We are working throughout the remainder of the school year to finalize logistics surrounding carpool, early dismissal, late arrivals, etc and will communicate changes in the summer of 2024.

Galloway has partnered with the architecture firm Cooper Carry and construction company Winter Construction. We are also working with our Chastain Park Partners and neighbors in the surrounding community to ensure this project does not overwhelm the park or surrounding neighborhoods.

Early Learning renovations will occur during the summer of 2025. 

The current construction timeline for the new Upper Learning building is 15-18 months. Students will be in the building no later than January 2026; this includes contingency time in order to account for any potential delays with construction.  

We are continuing to finalize the logistics of what carpool will look like and will communicate well in advance of the 2024-25 school year. 

Parking on campus will not be drastically affected. Parking on the Upper Field is yet to be determined. The NYO Gravel Lot and Elliott Galloway Way will still be open for use.

Flik will remain housed in the Middle Learning building during construction. Student dining will not be impacted for any level.

We are investigating several spaces on campus to serve as a satellite library, as well as looking into options for off-site resource storage. 

The comprehensive cost of the project is $35M. This includes the construction of the new Upper Learning building, major renovations to the EL Sims Building, renovations to the bottom floor of the ML Arnold building, several upgrades to The Green, the securing of the perimeter of the school, and construction of an all-school courtyard.

The goal is to fund the entire project through Galloway Forward: A Campaign to Ignite, Inspire, and Imagine. Galloway currently carries no debt and owns all of its land; the goal of this project is to remain debt free.

Tuition will not increase beyond the typical annual tuition increase. These annual tuition increases provide for faculty and staff salaries; capital expenses are not paid for by tuition dollars.

There will be no tuition discount for Upper Learning students. Other than the location of their classes, there will be no changes to your child’s educational experience at Galloway. 

There will be several naming opportunities at various giving levels for the new building that will be communicated soon.
