Fifth-graders visit Microsoft's new offices
Posted 02/28/2018 02:00PM

On Friday, Feb. 23, the entire fifth-grade class visited the new Microsoft offices at the Avalon in Alpharetta. Organized by a parent, students experienced the future of digital interactive devices.

The Galloway contingent was the first student class to visit the new facility. The students were organized into small groups that rotated through the various technology labs during their visit. One set of students learned how to code using HTML and Javascript. Another cohort experienced the Microsoft server room, learning about server storage and care. A third group visited the Microsoft Maker Space, looking at how to create virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), and how to use 3-D printers. As part of the AR lesson, the students learned that in contemporary medical schools, future surgeons are trained using similar AR to "see" organs.

In the coding unit, the students coded Level One of a new game and returned to Galloway with the ability to continue to code the next two levels remotely. ML technology specialist Dr. Sandra Varajic is energized to build on the enthusiasm of the students for digital learning.
