Parents Association

Aspiring Antiracists (AAR) is a brave space where white parents at Galloway can confront anti-Black racism and unconscious bias - that which is within us as individuals and within the systems we inhabit. We do this through mutual study, conversation, and honesty in an effort to move from helpful thoughts and words to healing and just actions. 

We are motivated by Galloway’s strong sense of itself as a community of inclusion. This vision compels us to gather intentionally as white parents because we recognize that the work of addressing anti-Black racism is primarily ours to do. And we do not do this work in isolation, but in close consultation with - and accountability to - FoCUS (Families of Color United for Success) and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

The objective of the Parent Volunteer Committee is to help promote all the wonderful PA volunteer opportunities, recruit new volunteers, and raise the community's awareness of the benefits of volunteering across all learning levels. Twice a year (Back to School-August and Open House-February/March), we host a volunteer fair to give all committee chairs a chance to market their events and recruit volunteers.

The Galloway Parent Book Club meets several times per year to discuss a book selected by the group. The book club is free of charge, open to our entire parent community, and readers may join at any time during the year.

Communications is the liaison between the Parents Association and the Galloway Communications Department and serves as the editor for any and all material published in the Gazette and/or the Parent Portal regarding the Parents Association. The goal is to raise community awareness of the Parents Association--who we are, what we do--which will help generate interest and volunteers.

The Community Cookout is one of the few events every year that brings the entire parent body together for no other reason other than to socialize, have fun and celebrate the start of the school year. Historically held in the evening on the Blue under a tent and lights, it’s a chance to reconnect with friends and welcome our new parents into the community.

Volunteers are needed to help organize and execute the Community Cookout at beginning of school year.

Community festivals are events where we can gather as an entire community. Activities generally include games, jumps and slides, arts and crafts, as well as food trucks, entertainment, haunted house, prizes, baked treats and a sweet walk.

Volunteers are solicited to help plan for and work the day of the event, including set up and clean up, baked goods, games, activities, entertainment and publicity.

Early Learning Parents are actively involved in each classroom and grade. Opportunities to volunteer are varied and abundant from dropping off treats for a class party, donating supplies for a special project, chaperoning a field trip, and helping with class performances. The classroom and grade opportunities are flexible and sure to fit most parents' schedules and interests. A sampling of volunteer opportunities includes:

• Contact Parents - Contact parents coordinate activities among teachers and parents for your child’s class, including field trips, in-class parties, teacher appreciation events, bake sales, and more.
• Back to School Night - Volunteers provide refreshments for this Early Learning evening.
• Lunch with the Class - Have lunch with your child’s class, one day each month while Early Learning teachers meet for lunch.
• Teacher Appreciation Breakfasts - Parents provide a monthly continental breakfast for all Early Learning teachers and staff.
• Field Day - Parents help with this spring day of track and field events by offering transportation to the Athletics Complex, staffing games, and providing refreshments.
• Carpool Monitors - Greet and assist Early Learning students at morning carpool.

Families of Color United for Success (FoCUS) was created with the mission to serve as an inclusive group for families or students at The Galloway School who identify themselves as people of color. We periodically meet to develop a stronger community through fellowship and purposeful activities. We are also a group that supports and promotes The Galloway School’s diversity initiatives and programs in various ways.

As its name implies, this committee offers support in the form of cards, food, contributions, toys and books, for faculty, staff, and Galloway families dealing with an illness or other type of hardship, as well as celebrating happy times such as births, engagements, marriages, etc.

This committee of volunteers is responsible for planning and implementing functions primarily for staff and faculty appreciation throughout the year. These functions range from a welcome lunch for new staff and faculty before school starts, to coordinating teacher lunches and gifts at the holidays, during teacher appreciation week, and during post-planning at the end of the school year.

There are volunteer positions open weekly and monthly in the Early and Middle Learning libraries. In addition, the Early Learning and Middle Learning Library volunteers coordinate and oversee the fall and spring book fairs. Middle Learning parent volunteers coordinate service projects, class parties and teacher appreciation. A sampling of Middle Learning parent volunteer opportunities includes:

• Contact Parents - Contact Parents coordinate activities among teachers and parents, including classroom communication, Middle Learning open house, in-class parties, grade-level parties, and teacher appreciation. Each grade-level contact parent participates in meetings with the Middle Learning administration each quarter and works with the coordinators to organize events throughout the year.
• Teacher Appreciation Breakfasts - Parents provide a monthly continental breakfast for all Middle Learning teachers and staff.

The Ambassador Program works in conjunction with Admissions to welcome both prospective and new families to Galloway. The goal of the Ambassador program is to provide familiar, friendly faces to new families throughout their entire Admissions process.

The Parents Association Parliamentarian is knowledgeable in meeting rules of order and proper procedures for conducting PA meetings. The PA Bylaws define the make-up, governance, rights and responsibilities of the PA. The PA Parliamentarian assists with the drafting and interpreting of those rights and responsibilities.
