As you may be aware, our Galloway day is also immediately following Earth Day! As part of our day of celebration on campus, we are fortunate to be partnering with our neighbors at that Chastain Park Conservancy to give back to our beautiful, shared surroundings.
Our volunteers will be planting ferns on the slopes and hillsides adjacent to Hamburger Pond. This will reduce soil erosion and add beauty to the area. Reducing the amount of soil that washes into the pond will help improve the water quality and improve its suitability as a habitat for wildlife. The ferns we will be planting are native to Georgia and are found growing wild in Chastain Park. "Native plants” are those that occur naturally in a region in which they evolved. They are the ecological basis upon which life depends, including birds and people. Without them and the insects that co-evolve with them, local birds cannot survive. Volunteers can look forward to a productive morning of giving back and fun!
