Using Technology in Statistics

Using Technology in Statistics

by Head of Community Engagement Gordon Mathis

In Tori Powers’ Statistics and AP Statistics courses for juniors and seniors, she incorporates a range of apps to support learning in the classroom and on screen. Zoom is de rigueur; she also uses the Smart Learning Suite and the Epson Board. Her use of technology does not stop there, as she also utilizes online graphing applets and StatsMedic. Her “home page” in Canvas is a model of organized and streamlined lesson-planning to support her students - on campus and at home.

Her use of the combination of these platforms allows online students to log onto the lesson she has designed which students in the classroom see on the Epson Board. All students can write or type on the prepared document; Ms. Powers uses “break-out rooms” for small groups of students to explore solutions to problems; she can virtually pop in to join in the collaborative work among the students.

The STAPPLET website contains resources for ideas and techniques that Ms. Powers can include in her classroom instruction. In addition, last summer she participated in a Global On-Line Academy (GOA) course to learn how to build relationships among students who are separated by technology.

“I like technology; it keeps me on my toes!” she laughs. “It makes me a better teacher, and it benefits students in the long run.”

As a member of the Galloway Class of 2002, Ms. Powers values the relationships she developed when she was a student on campus and wants to create and sustain similar relationships among current students. Through innovative technology, students are empowered to learn Statistics at Galloway!
