Students Design Banned Book Trading Cards

Did you know this week is Banned Books Week? Galloway's ML/UL librarian Chelsea Larson asked students to create and submit art pieces inspired by books that have been challenged, banned, or censored. Students submitted artwork inspired by The Hunger Games series, The Lorax, Alice in Wonderland, The Hate U Give, and Stamped. UL technology teacher MariaPaola Jimenez then printed each design onto trading cards for display in classrooms.

Seventh grader Mya Dorfman's artwork for Alice in Wonderland depicts Alice's ownership of wonderfland, rather than the weak version of Alice portrayed by Disney. When asked how she felt about the banning of books, Mya wrote, " I think that literature should be free space for authors to speak their minds. Banning and silencing the voices of artists is ridiculous."
