Senior Selected for Apprenticeship at Reebok

Jada Ryce (‘21) has been selected for a two-month apprenticeship with Reebok after submitting her sneaker design to their partnership with Yellowbrick called #WriteYourLegacy. The fifteen selected high school students will also have a mentorship with Reebok designer Xavier Jones and the chance to reimagine an iconic Rebook Classic silhouette.

Working with UL art teacher Lore Ruttan in her independent study on graphic design and marketing, Jada drew inspiration for her sneaker design, entitled Friday Skate, from the skating rinks she grew up visiting. The light pattern on the bottom of the shoe and the neutral base represents the scratches on the wooden rink, while the brighter colors call to mind glowsticks and disco lights. The back tag of the shoe features a pattern inspired by the carpet at the rink.

“I know that brighter shoes with neon colors can be harder to style, but this shoe has the right amount of neutral tones and ‘eye catchiness’ so everyone can rock this design,” she said.
