Science Machine Delights Early Learning Students

On Thursday, August 31, Early Learning students in second, third, and fourth grades were treated to a very special 45-minute presentation about science. Michael Green, who goes by the professional show name of The Science Machine, held more than 100 students spellbound with his fast-paced and interactive examples of science.

Science Machine was brought to Galloway by Latifah Williams, Galloway’s Instructional Technology Specialist, with the help of an innovation grant funded by the Goizueta Foundation.

In the three grades, students learn scientific concepts such as changes of matter, wind force, and chemical reactions. “I liked how he turned the water in the cup into a solid,” one student remembered. “It was cool that he used a mineral to do that.”

Another recounted, “My favorite part about The Science Machine was when he took the trash bucket and made the fog explode. It was cool how he made the fog launch around the room!” These students are well on their way to experiencing the three stages of matter, gas, liquid, and solid.

Second grade teacher Helen Francis accompanied her students to the presentation added, “Our students got excited: they wanted to learn more and didn't even want to leave. They wanted more science!” She continued, “Our class went back and journaled about our experience and their writings were so much more detailed than any previous writing they have done in second grade.”

“When I asked students after seeing Science Machine, what science was, they were able to articulate it," said third grade Mandy Whitfield, "They were excited about it, and they absolutely loved him.”

Fourth grade teacher Casey Key recognized the educational value of the interactive scientific presentation. “The students are now super motivated and excited to explore science,” she added.

The Science Machine is an educational partner with CHOA and Home Depot; he has presented at Braves games and at Six Flags Over Georgia. Learn more about The Science Machine at scienceforevery1.com!
