Journalism Students Tackle Local, National Topics in The Elliott

Journalism Students Tackle Local, National Topics in The Elliott

by Assistant Head of School for Academics David Long

Did you know that Galloway has its own student newspaper? Once known as The Columns, The Elliott is run by Upper Learning students as part of Upper Learning English teacher Josh Corin’s journalism elective.

Led by editors Annie Levy ‘22, Ruby Kaufman ‘22, and Sophia Sanders ‘22, the staff of 11 students strives to create a publication that their peers want to read. From covering Galloway happenings to exploring current events, students enjoy the challenge of writing articles from multiple perspectives as it pushes them, as writers, to be objective. The students shared that they feel a deep responsibility to “get things right” and report things accurately, as they owe it to their readers to provide credible journalism.

One of their favorite things is hearing students agree or disagree with pieces that they have written as they want a healthy discourse to take place in our community. Students also enjoy discovering new ways to engage more readers, such as advertising in Town Hall and creating an Instagram account that has increased user engagement with The Elliott’s website.

This class is a wonderful example of how Galloway strives to provide authentic learning opportunities with a forum that gives them the freedom to share their voice. The students also recognize the great responsibility that comes with the freedom that they have been given and produce a student newspaper that is engaging, credible, and thought-provoking. We encourage you to check out the newspaper’s website, as well as in their twice-yearly printed editions, available around campus.
