Galloway Student Receives GOA Citation Award

Galloway Student Receives GOA Citation Award

by Global Online Academy Site Director and Associate Director of College Counseling Ann Fountain

This year, Galloway sent its first cohort of students on a (virtual) journey around the world as they pursued semester and year-long courses through Global Online Academy, a consortium of 120+ partner schools from 27+ countries. Selections for Upper Learning students included Medical Problem Solving, Gender & Society, Game Theory, and Filmmaking (check out sophomore Drew Gauch's music video and senior Zoe Tilley's short film!).

We are particularly proud of the two Galloway students who participated in GOA's Catalyst Conference, where 550+ students designed projects to spark change in their communities. We encourage you to interact with their websites, and explore the work of other students from around the globe! Mary Pleiss '21 used skills and knowledge from her GOA Positive Psychology course to highlight gratitude practices that can help adolescents struggling with their mental health during the pandemic.

Kelsey Richardson '22 (pictured at left) built upon her GOA Abnormal Psychology class to address self-esteem and eating disorders in middle learning students and was selected from more than 400 presentations to receive a GOA Citation Award! Citations are awarded by Global Online Academy and member school faculty to those presentations that best represent the goals of the conference: raising awareness, promoting grassroots action, and promoting institutional change. Congratulations, Kelsey!

A number of students also participated in GOA's short, non-credit intensives; school counselor Mary Giattina's Middle Learning classes dove into Growth, Grit, and Gratitude while the Upper Learning students in Galloway's Facing History and Ourselves elective spent a week exploring Who We Are, What We Say, What It Means: Conversations about Race.

Faculty have been able to benefit from this partnership as well; since Galloway joined GOA last January, 38 faculty and staff members have participated in over 86 professional development courses.
