Fourth Graders Lead the Way in EL Carpool

By Head of Community Engagement Gordon Mathis

Beginning this year, the school has offered all fourth grade students the opportunity to contribute to community building in Early Learning. Have you noticed students wearing blue vests during Early Learning carpool? They are our new fourth grade carpool leaders!

Students volunteer for a weekly commitment to welcome Pre-K and Kindergarten students to the school day and to walk them to the playground or to the Atrium. At the end of the day, the guides also meet younger students and walk with them out of the building to the carpool line.

EL Principal Kelly Kelly explained, “We are cultivating a buddy system within Early Learning, linking older and younger students.” A program that began as a tool to help carpool run more smoothly has developed into a learning and service opportunity for older elementary students.

These fourth grade leaders have made a significant commitment to this new leadership role, giving up their own playground time in the mornings. Over the summer, they participated in training to understand the expectations and responsibilities expected of them. EL Assistant Principal Kim Washington noted, “The youngsters take this new role seriously! They see the impact of their jobs, and the parents and staff are appreciative of their help.”

What a great way for students to grow in self-confidence and leadership under the watchful eyes of the adults in the carpool line! The next time you see our helpers in their blue vests, we encourage you to give them a smile and a wave.
