ML Tech Teacher to Lead Global AI Classes

ML Tech Teacher to Lead Global AI Classes

Galloway’s ML technology teacher, Mark Gerl, has been offered the opportunity to share his knowledge with teachers around the world! Mr. Gerl is an integral member of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and has witnessed interest in Artificial Intelligence grow over the past six years, especially last year following the publicity about ChatGPT. This spring, he will co-facilitate the 8-week online advanced class “AI in the Classroom” for other teachers.

Mr. Gerl collaborated with professors from Columbia Teachers College and Old Dominion University in planning the course. Teachers will participate in hands-on experiential learning, investigating how to use AI for teachers.

“I see so many teachers responding to the encroachment of AI in their classrooms,” Gerl observes. “I want to put humanity back into the technology, so teachers and their students can see AI as a tool for self-expression and go deeper into a topic.”

Gerl’s goal for the course is for teachers to try an activity, reflect on it, and consider its application in their regular classroom settings. During the summer, Gerl and his collaborators will present their findings from the course at the international conference of ISTE.

Galloway is fortunate to have a teacher (in his 18th year teaching at Galloway) with such a strong following outside of the school who instructs students routinely in ML.
