Four UL Students Receive Scholastic Art Honors

Congratulations to Sophie Cadiou ‘24, Elisabeth Levy ‘24, Lily Schweber ‘23, and Emma Stoll ‘24 on receiving recognition from the prestigious Scholastic Art Awards, a national competition for visual arts and writing!

Sophie received a Gold Key for her mixed media piece Je Me Souviens, which translates to I remember. “This piece means a lot to me, not only because I completed it in two short days, but also because it reminds me of myself,” she explains. “In the early summer before my junior year, I had been inspired to make a piece about my past, digesting my past experiences and improving my mental health overall. I combined all three of these ideas throughout this piece. It represents the feeling of being held back and restricted by past traumas, and how everything can seem like pure chaos.”

Lily received a Silver Key for her sculpture Lucky 7, named after an important symbol l in her life. This piece is deeply rooted in the meaningful relationship Lily shares with her mom - someone who has inspired her to work and connect with children. Lily hopes to study education in college, just like her mom.

Elisabeth received three Honorable Mentions. Her painting Innocence is a piece of her with her dad. “I painted it with oils for him for Father’s Day,” she says. “It symbolizes the innocence of childhood and the beginnings of the bond I would grow to forever have with him.” Her drawing and illustration Radiance is a portrait of her favorite model in her portrait drawing class named Annie; Elisabeth describes it as reflecting Annie’s radiant persona as she looks into the distance with a feeling of contentment and peace. Her painting Eternity of her 112-year-old great-grandmother Lousie is meant to show that she will live eternally in Elisabeth’s eyes, while the doves in her eyes. represent that peace and eternity in her soul.

Emma received an Honorable Mention for her painting Through the Wyoming Mountains. She described this piece as helping her "break away from [her] perfectionism and focus on adding fewer details."

Sophie and Lily will now have their work exhibited at SCAD on Saturday, March 4, and will go on to compete at the national level. We are so proud of these talented artists!
