Fifth Grader Raises Money for The Atlanta Children's Shelter

Fifth-grader Alex Belsky is spending her winter break, not just opening her own presents, but raising money for others.

The amount of children and families in Metro Atlanta that face homelessness and food insecurity has risen significantly since the COVID outbreak, and Alex decided to do something to help. Her family has been actively involved with The Atlanta Children's Shelter since pre-COVID.

Alex created fliers and she and her parents delivered them to around 80 mailboxes and knocked on doors in her neighborhood.

Alex ended up raising $13,020! Alex says, "The money that [was] donated to The Atlanta Children’s Shelter will help a child for a year with food, education, and health services. Also, it will feed the 50 current children 3 hot meals and snacks for a week."

The Atlanta Children's Shelter's goal is "to break the cycle of poverty for families facing homelessness by building pathways to long-term self-sufficiency, and providing quality early childhood education."

Jeanine Belsky, Alex's mom, says, "The Atlanta Children's Shelter is still in need of donations, and if any other student and/or family would like to get involved and/or donate, they can fill out a form on the ACS website or contact Sandy Holiday at email sholiday@acsatl.org. It's a great way to support those in need during the pandemic and throughout the year!"
