Fifth grade scientists recently went on a field experience to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The tour guides were epidemiologists who shared about their current work on malaria, HIV, and other diseases.
Student Estella Cramer shared, “it was really interesting learning about the history of the CDC and different diseases. We learned about diseases such as smallpox.”
Adam Kotz shared, “I would recommend other kids visit the CDC because it is a great place to learn about viruses and how the CDC is working to prevent them.”
Prior to the visit, 5th Grade Science teacher, Jordan Byrd, taught a unit focused on public health. Students were able to choose whether they wanted to study viruses and bacteria, virus prevention, virus history, or the role of epidemiologists in public health.
“Encouraging and maintaining interest in STEM careers is at the forefront of my teaching mission. When young scientists see science in action, the concepts become meaningful and impactful,” she said.
We are fortunate to have Ms. Byrd in Middle Learning, the CDC in our backyard, and that students continue to use Atlanta as their classroom!
