IN THE CLASSROOM: UL Botany Creates Plant Presses in Theatre Tech Shop

This year's theme at Galloway is fearlessness. Science teacher Sally Harvey encouraged her students to be fearless when they started the school year off with a visit to the Theater Tech Shop for a hands-on project!

Ms. Harvey's Botany students partnered with theatre tech teacher Liz Whalen to create their own flower press using scrap materials and the saws found in the shop. The students measured the appropriate size for the press based on the outline in their composition book. Students began by cutting out cardboard pieces to protect the plants as they are drying in the press. Students then proceeded to the circular saw where they cut out the pieces for their flower press. For some students, it was their first time using a circular saw! They finished by assembling the press with glue and pneumatic staples.

The Botany class will be collecting plants and flowers during the school year and will be pressing them to use in class for labs. Students will use the press to compare the pigments of plants and document the different types of plants and colors.  Many of the tools and that students used were made possible due to the STEAM grant that we received from the Goizueta Foundation. The students enjoyed the opportunity to be fearless as they created their own press.
