Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin introduced an official Atlanta City Council proclamation dedicating Nov. 30 as The Galloway School’s Founder’s Day in honor of the unique educational vision of Mr. Galloway. The proclamation was read by Head of School Tom Brereton and former Heads of School Linda Martinson and Joe Richardson.

Atlanta City Council Member Clair Muller announced the official renaming of Pool Drive to Elliott Galloway Way in recognition of Mr. Galloway’s contributions to the city of Atlanta. Muller, Mayor Franklin, Jeff Galloway, and city council candidate and Galloway alumnus Amir Farokhi '96 also participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Students from each learning level read words of wisdom from Mr. Galloway, and representatives from the Students Association presented their plan for a time capsule to be assembled in the spring and opened 40 years from now. The program concluded with a video tribute to Mr. Galloway and to the history of the school produced by Galloway parent Mark Feinberg.

A reception in the Chaddick Center followed the main ceremony, where The Galloway School unveiled plans for a lasting tribute to Mr. Galloway. Atlanta sculptor Martin Dawe of Cherrylion Studios has been commissioned to create an outdoor classroom, complete with a sculpture of Mr. Galloway and a student sitting on a log. Guests were able to meet Dawe and see plans for the outdoor classroom, as well as view maquettes and other visual aids that described the concept and installation of the sculpture’s components on Galloway’s campus. Founder’s Day Chair Hillery McNeill announced that $60,000 has been raised for the classroom, which will cost $85,000. Please contact Director of Development Linda Levy (l.levy@gallowayschool.org) if you would like to support this special project in honor of Mr. Galloway.

In the early afternoon, former Olympic runner Jeff Galloway led students in a short walk/run, which will become an annual Founder’s Day event. The youngest Early Learning students participated in their own run on campus this morning.

Founder’s Day is part of a series of events throughout the 2009-2010 school year that celebrate Galloway’s 40th anniversary. On Sept. 3, 1969, Elliott Galloway opened the doors of The Galloway School for the first time. The past four decades have witnessed the realization of his dream to create a school where, instead of learning facts and processes, children would learn how to learn—about academics and themselves.
